This is from the forecast discussion of Major Hurricane Florence from this afternoon. As a meteorologist, when I saw this, my heart sank. They don’t use wording like this for every storm.
Florence is going to be a devastating. There will be huge amounts of flooding, both from inland rain and from costal storm surge. Winds are going to be some of the strongest you can get from a hurricane. People within the path of this storm could lose everything.
If you know anyone who lives on the North or South Carolina coast, tell them that if there’s an evacuation ordered, they need to get the hell out. Do not take chances with this one.
Reblogging again to add a list of things/essentials from a friend who lives on the NC coast and has weathered hurricanes and other bad weather:
– toiletries (paper towels, toilet paper, baby wipes for “bathing” in case power & water go out)
– water, 1 gallon per person for at least 7 days (err on the side of caution if possible); more if you have animals!!
– non perishable food items, if you get canned food make sure you have a can OPENER
– pet food & supplies, if you’re really worried about flooding it may be beneficial to get life vests for your pets, also find a way to put identification information on them!
– batteries
– flashlights
– battery packs for cell phones charged up in case of loss of power
– filled cars with gas & filled gas can(s)
– get all essentials like passports, important docs, and cherished items together & ready to go
– just in case, determine a way to get onto your roof safely
– fill bathtubs with water so if water isn’t available you can refill the toilets to keep flushing and keep waste to a minimum
– if you have dogs look up how to make a makeshift potty, you can use a hard baby pool and some sod potentially
– check your prescriptions and get them refilled now if necessary
– if you’re taking insulin and lose power, fill a separate cooler for your insulin than the one you would use for food. Insulin > food
If your place begins to flood get the hell OUT of the water!!! There is no telling if you have a live electrical charge in there!
Do not cross any water you cannot see the bottom of the ground in. I’m serious.
So my sister recently got a smart TV and she’s called me and said she wants me to come help her “set it up.” What she actually means is that she wants me to come login to Hulu and Netflix (because the cable guy already made sure that both the cable and Wi-Fi are connected).
I’ve explained to her that accessing my streaming sites is just a matter of entering my email and password. Like literally! Hit the source button on her remote, hit okay on the Netflix icon, and put in my email and password. The Hulu icon hasn’t shown up right away, so she’ll need to hit the source button on her remote, then hit okay on the search icon on the right hand side, type “hulu”, and if the icon shows up, enter my email and password. If the tv can’t pull it up, she can go through her blu ray. Find the damn icon and enter my email and password.
She said she doesn’t feel comfortable. So I said I would walk her through it over the phone.
Her response? “I want you to come do it because I don’t wanna mess anything up.” Wtf She knows how to hit a damn icon and enter email/usernames and password!
I’m so irritated.
It’s one thing for someone to not know how to do/use something- If I know how, I’ll teach them. If I don’t know how, I’ll find out and then show them too.
It’s another thing when they don’t want to learn! If I learned it THEY CAN TOO omfg.
It’s even more aggravating when they know how but won’t try on a “new device/site” even though it’s the same fucking process! She’s had a smart tv before, granted the set up was a little different in that she controlled everything with her cell, but it was still “tap the damn icon, enter a login and password” for initial setup.
So now I’m supposed to drive 30 minutes away to literally tap source, ok, directional arrows a few times, ok, directional arrows a few more times, ok. ????
I think I’m even more irritated because this isn’t the first time we’ve been through this. I can’t remember if it was showing her how to use the Kindle on her phone versus the computer, or maybe it was her Amazon account overall. Whatever it was, she was always wanting me to log into a thing for her so eventually I had her do it herself and she was fine. But when she went to the other device she was acting all brand new and kept wanting me to do it for even though I was like ‘it’s the same process…’ I remember her being pissed as fuck at me because I wouldn’t just do it for her. I kept telling her that she’s going to have to learn to do it anyway – because who wants to have new shit and be unable to use it– so I’m not going to keep doing it for her. I would/will answer whatever questions she had but *she* was gonna have to do it.
So what’s probably going to happen is I’ll stop by her house the next day I happened to be on that side of town, because I refused to make an extra trip over there for this, and still have her do it herself. She’s going to be pissed but it’s either that or she’s never learn to work her own tv.
