1. Tumblr Idiots don’t know that Bryan Singer got fired from the movie. He was replaced with Dexter Fletcher, and his involvement with the film is (rightly) either being ignored outright by the power at be or dismissed as unimportant. Fletcher said he doesn’t know if Singer will be even given a credit for the film. Boycotting because of his partial involvement is beyond stupid.
2. Tumblr Idiots don’t know Freddie was officially diagnosed with AIDS in 1986/87 (depending on who you believe), but are mad that it won’t be a central narrative even though its a movie about THE BAND, not just Freddie, and the movie only goes up to the Live Aid concert in ‘85. What do you want, for them to just rearrange the events of his life to make no sense? “Facing a life-threatening illness, Freddie leads the band in one of the greatest performances in the history of rock music” is literally part of the movie’s description, it hasn’t been erased, its going to be looked at in what I can only assume will be a sobering last act.
3. Tumblr idiots don’t know who Mary Austin is, and are bitching about Freddie being shown involved with “a woman” as “homophobic” and “erasure”. Mary Austin was his girlfriend for 6 years, his beloved friend, his muse, one of his greatest supports after his diagnosis, and the person he left everything he had to when he died. Y’all are some seriously ignorant jerks if you think Mary shouldn’t be in the movie, whether or not you agree with her choices in the years after he died has no bearing on her influential role in his life. Also Freddie’s boyfriend Jim Hutton is literally in the film, but cursory research is apparently beyond some of these people. He was who he was, he loved several men, he loved one woman, he was a queer icon and you can relate to that how you like but stop putting him in an exclusionary box when he himself refused to be labelled.
Regarding the last part: Freddie was a nortious bisexual. People tend to forget that
^^literally this bugs me SO MUCH. Everyone paints Freddie like he’s a gay icon and that’s fine but he was a confirmed bisexual and not acknowledging that is just another example of erasure
Y’all, properly tagging doesn’t shield you from criticism. If you write trash, even if you tag it, people are allowed to not like it. Now, if the call out posts have actual issues, lets address those, but saying that people aren’t allowed to criticize a work or a concept or a trope just because it’s tagged is dumb and generally the last fall back of people who know what they’ve written is nasty to a group and they don’t want to be reminded of that.
No one said people aren’t allowed to dislike something. However, their dislike of a thing doesn’t entitle them to harassment of the author.
No, let’s not address issues because the moment you make a callout post about a piece of fiction, you’ve practically opened the door for the writer to get harassed. I have seen this happen on this site a few times lately.
You can simply click the x button and exit the fanfic. No one is holding a gun to your head and forcing you to read. If you see a fic tagged “X character is a dick,” proceed to read it, and then make callout posts about the author because how dare they show X character being a dick, you’re the one writing trash, not the author.
So, from what I’m getting here, you’re allowed to dislike something, but not allowed to say something, because some other person might take it too far. What your saying is that no one can ever criticize anyone. That is bad for a number of reasons.
Firstly, no one is ever going to learn about their mistakes if no one can point them out. Secondly, it silences minorities who are hurt by negative representations of themselves and who, under this rule, can’t even explain how they are affected. And lastly, it creates a largely disconnected fandom since no one can really interact in any way other than through a positive reinforcement echo chamber.
And no, no one is holding a gun to my head and forcing me to read anything. No one’s forcing me to read fandom. But just because I don’t absolutely have to read something doesn’t mean I’m not allowed to take issue with it. If something is toxic and vile in fandom, I don’t want it splattered everywhere, I don’t want to have to interact with people who support that thing, and I don’t want to be ostracized for criticizing it. There have been fandoms and ships ruined for me because there was a small group of dedicated people writing fetishizing fic that was actively hostile to me and created an environment in which I was not clearly not wanted, welcomed or tolerated. And do you know what everyone said when anyone tried to speak up about how it was problematic, how it attacked who they were, and how it made fandom toxic?
“Don’t like don’t read.”
Again, I am not saying no to criticism, but to harassment. There is a difference.
I’m sorry, but if you are harmed by a fanfiction, then you are the one who has an issue. There are certain kinks I find creepy or gross. I don’t read fics about them and then complain about how they harmed me. Instead, I simply avoid them. It’s easy like that.
The problem here is, people think they get to be assholes to people just because they belong to an X demographic. And think that their belonging to an X demographic makes them right. It doesn’t. It really doesn’t.
Criticism: “You have a problem with repetition, you keep misspelling this word, maybe add more description here,” etc.
Harassment: telling the author they are a misogynist fetishist for writing kinky villain x hero fanfics, and sending them hate with those accusations.
They told you the truth. Don’t like it, don’t read it. If you are in a community that bothers you, then don’t be in that community anymore. This is fandom, not real world. You don’t get to tell people not to write certain fics just because you personally dislike them. No one forced you to read them.
Those responses are pure comedy. 😂😂😂😂😂
Dear lord of sanity and restraint, it has been a long time since my last direct disk horse addition nonsense but I’ve been moody all day long because my wisdom teeth are pain in the ass and my fuse is short…
Anyway there is a difference between criticism and just being an asshole because you think you can steam roll over anything you find even remotely problematicTM and bully people you don’t know that more often than not live two continents away from you.
If something is toxic and vile in fandom, I don’t want it splattered everywhere, I don’t want to have to interact with people who support that thing, and I don’t want to be ostracized for criticizing it.
It’s not splattered everywhere. You are not walking down the street and seeing it splattered on every possible surface, staring and yelling at you as you walk from point A to point B. It has tags, they exist for just this very reason. You do not get to read shit ton of tags, click on the thing you were clearly warned about and don’t like, then be a bullying asshole in the comments.
There is this thing called ‘backspace’ or ‘x’ mark on the tab. Click it, use it. Filter shit you don’t want/dislike/hate to read. You have options to do that. You are not entitled to socio-political masterpieces, especially ones that are done for free and in free time. You want one? Write one. It’ll be a good writing exercise. Do you know how much I have become desensitized and numb to serious issues because of this hellsite and people like you harping about ‘x,y,z’ things are problematic in this and this fanfic?
If I want to write a badly written Mary Sue with shit ton of stereotypes and worn out, six times dead tropes people keep bringing back to life because I feel like it, I will write it and if you read it even though I put six hundred tags telling you it’s a fucking Mary Sue then what is the real problem here?
antis when they ship it: you don’t suddenly become mature at 18! of course it’s okay for this 18 year old to date this under 18 year old!
antis when they do not ship it: why would an 18 year old, a LEGAL ADULT, ever want to date someone under 18?? this is illegal. get ready for the storm buddy, cause im calling the actual police right to your doorstep.
OH. MY. GOD. I thought I was away from this type of BS when I left the supernatural fandom. This is the same thing some Dest*el shippers used to do. Ughh. Not even getting in depth with how ridiculous their accusation is, it’s Sebastian… I knew him for playing gay roles before anything else… We know he has no issues with lgbt+ characters or storylines. So why would those fans even– 😡 And a few years back weren’t they claiming to want the characters Bi? …as in relationship with women is still possible…
Stuff like this makes me mad on so many levels. I’m not going to make you read all my ramblings though. I’m still at work right now anyway. So much for productivity lol
